Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail was born in Hospital Besar Alor Setar, Kedah Darul Aman on 30 December 1967. He is the eldest child of Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Ibni Almarhum Tuanku Syed Putra Jamalullail, Raja Perlis and Tuanku Tengku Fauziah binti Almarhum Tengku Abdul Rashid.

Education Background
Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra received his early education at Sekolah Rendah Kebangsaan Putra, Kangar from 1974 to 1979, before going on to Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Derma, Kangar (1980 – 1982) and Penang Free School, Penang for a year in 1983. In 1984, he began at Carey Grammar School, Melbourne, Australia before pursuing his first degree at La Trobe University, Melbourne, Australia in 1986. He obtained his Bachelor of Economics (B. Ec.) degree in 1989.

In 2010, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra was awarded Honorary Doctorate in Education (Honoris Causa) from La Trobe University. This was followed by an Honorary Doctorate in Management Sciences from Yala Rajabath University, Thailand in 2016.

Lessons from the World to the Palace
Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra began his career with Malaysian Airline System (MAS) in 1990 upon the completion of his degree studies in Melbourne, Australia. For a period of 12 years, he was Regional Manager for MAS in Madrid for Spain, Portugal and North Africa (1995-1998) and in Zurich for Switzerland, Austria and Central Europe (1998-2002). In 2002, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra found himself having to reluctantly leave his position due to his earlier installation as Raja Muda Perlis in 2000, and then the Acting Raja Perlis at the end of 2001, when the then Raja Perlis, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Ibni Tuanku Syed Putra Jamalullail was installed as Malaysia’s 12th Seri Paduka Baginda Yang DiPertuan Agong. The years he had spent working abroad and the experiences that came with them proved to have helped him steer himself smoothly into position, impressively taking the role of a state leader in ensuring the development of Perlis and its people took place appropriately.

The Royal Wedding
On 9 May 1994, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra married Tuanku Hajjah Lailatul Shahreen Akashah Khalil after a 6-year courtship. Born on 28 March 1970, Tuanku Hajjah Lailatul Shahreen Akashah Khalil is the second child of Dato’ Khalil bin Akasah and Datin Nik Rahimah binti Wan Ahmad. They have been blessed with two beautiful daughters, Sharifah Khatreena Nuraniah Jamalullail (10 February 1995), Sharifah Farah Adriana Jamalullail (4 March 2001) and a son, Syed Sirajuddin Areeb Putra Jamalullail (12 April 2009). Sharifah Khatreena Nuraniah Jamalullail graduated from the University of Melbourne in Bachelor of Arts (Major in Politics and International Relations and Anthropology) and is currently pursuing her Master’s degree. Sharifah Farah Adriana Jamalullail is doing her Foundation/Pre-University studies abroad while the youngest child, Syed Sirajuddin Areeb Putra Jamalullail is in primary school.

Firmly Grounded, Soaring High
Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra places great emphasis on the importance of knowledge acquisition, particularly in the lives of the people of Perlis. He firmly believes that a people’s development and growth are inextricably linked to the people’s level of knowledge acquisition. In this regard, he has been marching forward since his appointment as the first Chancellor of Universiti Malaysia Perlis (Kolej Universiti Kejuruteraan Utara Malaysia – KUKUM, at the time) in 2003. Strategies were developed to ensure the visibility of Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) and to enhance its graduate employability. Under his wings, UniMAP is now renowned as the top 230 universities in the world, with 12,882 local and international students, the majority of whom majoring in engineering. It is with his leadership as the Chancellor too that UniMAP has established strategic partnership with universities from more than 44 countries across the globe. In the same position too, he has been invited to talk and give keynote speeches in various institutions of higher learning, such as Universiti Ubudiyah, Banda Aceh, Indonesia; Daffodil International University, Dhaka, Bangladesh; Josai International University, Tokyo, Japan; and at Fujairah International Education and Career Fair 2016, Fujairah, in United Arab Emirates. On 15 April 2015, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra was appointed the Chancellor of Kolej Universiti Islam Perlis (KUIPs), a university college that has its niche in Islamic Management and Finance. Despite being a young player in the field, KUIPs has expanded its horizon to neighbouring Thailand and has collaborated with several universities in southern Thailand, an idea mooted by the Tuanku. Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra is passionate about the development of education in the state of Perlis, evident in his relentless support for programmes and activities organised by the Perlis branch of Universiti Teknologi MARA, Kolej Antarabangsa Profesional dan Teknologi Malaysia Perlis, other higher education institutions in the state, schools and Smart Reader Worldwide. He has consistently been involved in UniMAP Student Representative Council’s annual Knowledge Exploration Programme abroad, and to this day, is the only Chancellor who meets students on the day they first register at the university, and during the Convocation Ceremony.

Honouring the Eminence of Islam, Developing its Ummah
Since taking the lead of the Perlis State Islamic Affairs and Malay Customs Council (MAIPS) in 2002, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra has launched various transformation programmes to sustain the Council, such that support was received from the Malaysian Administrative Modernisation and Management Planning Unit (MAMPU). The efforts have paid off, with the collection of zakat and its distribution seeing multi-fold increase. The Tuanku has also introduced a method of zakat distribution that is people-friendly – MAIPs Peduli Menjejaki dan Menyantuni Asnaf. The method involves the Tuanku cycling throughout villages in the state of Perlis to identify and befriend the hardcore poor and those in need. Since 2013, the number of sessions has been consistently high, with 56 cycling sessions in 2013, 76 sessions in 2014, 106 in 2015, 88 in 2016 and until 3 October of 2017 Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra has completed 59 cycling sessions, with many in-need are lent a helping hand in each of the sessions. MAIPs’ international visibility has been evident, especially amongst middle-eastern countries, under the leadership of Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra. One of the more recent MAIPs project is its collaboration with Islamic Council (MAI) of six Andaman provinces of Southern Thailand. The collaboration is part of MAIPs’ effort to honour the eminence of Islam and develop the ummah. With MAIPs, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra has also visited the Syrian refugee camp in Jordan to see for himself the plight of the refugees and to deliver MAIPs financial contribution to help lessen their burden. MAIPs also grants scholarships to students from Perlis who are pursuing their studies abroad, and is also committed towards the states’ infrastructural development.

Ready, Come What May
The appointment of Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra as Commander in the Malaysian Army Reserve, 504th Regiment of the Territorial Army in 2002 brought fresh perspectives and hope to the nation’s voluntary defence team. Various initiatives have been implemented to attract many to join the Territorial Army. Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra places high hopes and expectations on each member of the Territorial Army, reminding them to always be vigilant and on ready-mode to face whatever challenge that may present itself. To motivate and hand gifts to members of the armed forces, the Raja Muda heads an annual state-organised event, held during the month of Ramadhan, which is called Program Jalinan Kasih Kerajaan Negeri Perlis ke Negeri Di Bawah Bayu in Sabah. Every other year, the Raja Muda heads a working visit abroad with trainee reserve officers of public universities (Pasukan Latihan Pegawai Simpanan; PALAPES). His active involvement in the military has earned him several Honorary Wings, including from the Malaysian Army, The Royal Malaysia Police, Royal Thai Police and Royal Thai Army. Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra is instrumental in the conceptualisation of the 504th Regiment of the Territorial Army Camp’s Syed Sirajuddin Areeb Putra Cross Obstacle Circuit.

Sports in the Life of Raja Muda of Perlis

Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra is active in sports. He represented Perlis in the under-12 football team in the Malaysian School Sports Council (MSSM) meet. He has also represented his school in hockey, sepak takraw and badminton. His devotion to sports sees him today as the President of the Perlis Golf Club, the founder and Royal Patron of Perlis Woodball Association. Under his patronage, Perlis found its way into “Malaysia Book of Records” when it successfully organised the longest woodball tournament on 31 August 2016, clocking up a total of 28 hours of non-stop play. Perlis was also given the honour of hosting World University Woodball Championship in 2014, and in 2020, Perlis will be hosting the Woodball World Cup. Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra currently enjoys cycling, playing football and woodball. He is an ardent supporter of the Perlis football team, and his presence during his reign as the Acting Raja of Perlis in the Malaysia Cup matches saw Perlis winning the Malaysia Cup twice. International football is also another one of his passion, which sees him being a zealous follower of Manchester United, and making visits to renowed football stadiums such as Old Trafford, Maracanã Stadium, Camp Nou, Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, St. Jakob-Park, Türk Telekom Stadium, to name a few.

To Travel is To Live
Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra has visited many Asean countries (Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, Brunei Darussalam, the Philippines, Vietnam and Cambodia), Central and East Asia (China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, South Korea, Japan, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Maldives, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan), and the Middle-East (Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Jordan, Bahrain and Kuwait). His extensive travel has also taken him to the Oceania (Australia & New Zealand), Africa (South Africa, Egypt, Mauritius, Morocco and Tunisia), the United States of America and Central America (USA, Mexico, Cuba, the Dominican Republic), South America ( Argentina, Brazil and Chile), and European countries (England, Scotland, Ireland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, the Netherlands, German, Belgium, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, France, Monaco, Spain, Portugal, Austria, the Czech Republic, the Slovak Republic, Hungary, Romania, Croatia, Turkey, Italy, Greece, Cyprus, Russia, Ukraine and Poland).

The People’s Raja
Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra is the Chair of the Tuanku Syed Putra Foundation (YTSP) Perlis, which he utilises as a platform to amplify support for, and place focus on, education, student development, academic and leadership purposes, with the sole aim of creating world-class mind-set amongst the people of Perlis. The Foundation also plays a key role in ensuring that those in need in the state receives assistance, such as educational scholarship and medical assistance, amongst others. One of the latest initiatives conceptualised by Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra is the setting up of a new baby fund by the name of Tabung Simpanan Bayi Lahir Putra Putri, which is a special contribution to babies born during the period of the Birthday celebration of the Raja of Perlis. As advisor to the Tuanku Fauziah Foundation (YTF), Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra sees to it that the status of women is upheld and that they are empowered. For example, towards that end, YTF identifies young ladies to attend Women Leadership Programme at Josai International University, in Japan for a period of one year. In his free time, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra travels much. In his visits, oftentimes he introduces Perlis abroad through Perlis Food Promotion. The people of Perlis are fortunate that their well-being is under the constant attention of the Raja Muda of Perlis.
